Armstrong Institute Events

Armstrong Institute Grand Rounds: Lola’s Song

When: Thursday, March 9 at noon
Where: Chevy Chase Bank Auditorium on the East Baltimore campus

Attend or view a live stream of the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality’s next Grand Rounds, “Lola’s Song: A Family’s Experience with Medical Errors and Missed Diagnoses.” Guest speakers Cathy and Alan Fitch share the story of their daughter, Lola, who died from a series of medical errors, missed diagnoses and lack of communication. Alan, a physician assistant at the hospital where his daughter was treated, speaks of how it challenged and changed him as a health care provider. Cathy speaks as a mother who lost a child and about the hope of bringing change in honor of her daughter. Together, they hope to bring awareness to the hundreds of thousands of lives lost each year due to medical errors. Learn more or watch the live stream. For questions, email AILearning@jhmi.edu.

Patient Safety Certificate Program

When: Monday, March 13 to Friday, March 17

Participate in the Armstrong Institute’s Patient Safety Certificate Program and get key concepts, tools and strategies to be an effective champion for preventing patient harm. Over five days, learners delve into performance improvement approaches while discovering strategies to engage their unit, clinic, clinical department or hospital in patient safety work. Registration for this free training experience continues through March 6, unless the course fills first.
Continuing nursing education credits are available.

Ash Wednesday and Lent

Observance: Today, March 1

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, a time of contemplation and a reminder of mortality and human frailty. This is marked with actual ashes created from the blessed palms from the previous year’s Easter celebration. Lent is a remembrance of the account of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the desert. The 2017 dates for Lent in the Western Christian traditions are March 1 through April 16.

Sibley Lab Changes

For the next two weeks the lab will be sending all sed rate tests to the Suburban Hospital lab for analysis. The Sibley lab has received its new sed rate analyzer. However, validation tests need to be completed first before patient specimens can be run. Unfortunately, the vendor of the old analyzer has discontinued support for it so we are unable to use it for patient testing. We will be sending the specimens via courier to Suburban at 8 a.m., 1 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

If you need a STAT sed rate, please let the lab know and a STAT courier can be called. Please expect a delay in the turnaround time while we work through the validation of the new analyzer. The lab will notify everyone when in-house testing resumes.
