Sibley Diversity & Inclusion Council Forum: Core Values

One of the Johns Hopkins Medicine core values is diversity and inclusion and we must be vigilant in ensuring this value is safeguarded and respected by all who enter our campus.

Sibley and Johns Hopkins have a zero tolerance policy for any actions of discrimination or disrespect of our patients, visitors, staff or volunteers. While Sibley has not experienced any issues directly related to the recent immigration restrictions, our colleagues in Baltimore experienced some confrontational language from a guest.

The Sibley Diversity and Inclusion Council is working to provide resources and tools to help staff navigate these very challenging times, and we are hosting employee forums to provide an opportunity for staff to discuss concerns related to this issue.

The forums will be facilitated by Tim Burroughs and Queenie Plater. Please join us for informal conversation and Q&A.

When: Thursday, March 23, at 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Where: Building A, Floor 1, Conference Room 1

Sugar–Not as Sweet as it Sounds

This week’s theme for National Nutrition Month is “Sugar–Not as Sweet as it Sounds.” Eating foods with too many added sugars can lead to poor nutrition. By filling up on sugar-laden fare, we may not be eating enough of the nutrient containing foods that keep us healthy.

Consumption of added sugars can also lead to tooth decay, weight gain and other health issues.

Most Americans eat way too many calories from added sugars.

If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of reducing the amount of added sugar in your diet and some tips on how to do that, please stop by the registered dietitian table in the cafeteria tomorrow from noon to 1 p.m. Play our “Wow—That’s a lot of Sugar!” matching game and pick up a free healthy snack.

Patient Safety Fair

Are you interested in what your fellow employees are working on in their CUSP teams to improve Sibley’s safety culture? Come out to the Patient Safety Fair from 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. to enjoy fun and refreshments in Building A ,Floor 1, Conference Rooms 1 & 2. There will be a photo booth, safety checklist comparisons, patient stories and more.

Today’s clue:
National patient safety goal (NPSG) number three is about improving the safety of using medications. NPSG.03.06.01 speaks to the importance of recording and passing along the correct information about patients’ medicine, comparing those medicines to new medicines given to patients, making sure patients know which medicine to take when they are at home and encouraging patients to bring their up-to-date list of medicines every time they visit a doctor.

This is called medication reconciliation. Although both nurses and physicians play an important role in this process, which department oversees the process here at Sibley?
