Sibley Oncologists Awarded Robert L. Sloan Inaugural Grants

The Robert L. Sloan Fund for Cancer Research at the Sibley Foundation has awarded its inaugural grants to recipients at the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley. A philanthropic gift launched the fund honoring Robert L. Sloan, Sibley’s president and CEO from 1985 to 2012.

Grants were awarded to physicians whose clinical focus is oncology and where specific projects were to originate in radiation oncology, medical oncology or surgical oncology. The Sloan Fund Awards were established to honor the achievements of the highest quality and impact based on their potential to influence our scientific understanding of cancer, and the clinical, operational and financial management of the disease.
Jean Wright, M.D., director of the breast program and associate professor for the Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences, Johns Hopkins Medicine, received her grant for a phase II study of preoperative single fraction stereotactic body radiotherapy to the intact breast in the early stage of low-risk breast cancer. Her study seeks to assess and analyze radiation response.

Pledge for Patient Safety!

Today marks the last day of Patient Safety Awareness Week, but Sibley’s pledge to patient safety lasts all year for every person, every time.

Look out for the Patient Safety Week committee’s last round on the units so that you can pledge to patient safety!

Today’s clue: Patient safety is about culture, error analysis and teaching. True commitment to patient safety requires action, not just statements about its importance. Sibley’s executive patient safety officer plays an important role in the success of the patient safety program. Who is this person?

Sharing Success

Congratulations, staff! We are making progress toward our patient experience goals. Kudos to the inpatient units for exceeding their goal!
